A Year in Review

Happy Holidays from the Skousen’s who should be in Saint Johns but have somehow ended the year in Gilbert, Arizona. This year has been full of twists. It seems almost strange, everything that we thought would happen one way didn’t and those we didn’t count on to work out did. For starters, who would have thought that I would end up pregnant and coaching tee-ball. Okay, the tee-ball coaching might come as a surprise, but I can hear all of you thinking it now, so to answer all of your enquiring minds, YES Scott and I do know what causes pregnancy. (We just weren’t planning on being pregnant so soon, really, I promise!) Another unexpected event presented itself when Scott applied for a new position within Salt River Project. Two weeks before school started we were packing our bags, looking for a house to rent, and school for Conner to go to for a few months while Scott had to do preliminary work for his new job in the valley. We also have sold our house in Saint Johns twice but never officially moved out. (Don’t ask) In fact all of our belongings are still in St. Johns except the very, very bare necessities. (We just recently were given a couch) I am happy to report that this interesting ride is almost over (or just beginning depending on how you look at it) as we prepare to return to our home in Saint Johns. One thing is for sure, we have learned that no matter what, Family is most important. Everything else is just an added bonus. We have truly enjoyed being closer to most of you this holiday season even if only for a short time.

Scott is still working for Salt River Project but has recently transferred within the company. He now is in the Major Projects Group. He is very excited about this change and is really enjoying his new job assignment which includes overseeing the planning, design, and construction of a new coal burning power plant in Springerville, Arizona. The job is complicated and stressful but Scott looks forward to the challenge. He loves that everyday is different, new problems to solve and challenges to overcome. Scott is currently teaching the Temple Preparation Class at church. He loves to get out on the green (go golfing) when he gets a chance. He also participated in church softball this year and has been permanently dubbed “Skousen the Slugger” at church. As for the rest of his precious time, we are at the end of football season you know and basketball season has begun which means that on any given day there is always a game to be watched.

Christy is busy being a housekeeper, meal preparer, tee-ball coach, financial advisor, booger wiper, laundry doer, clothing mender, answering service, taxi driver, diaper changer…(just to name a few) Mommy like always and loving it. (at least usually) In my “spare” time I work for AZ Firebird Contractors, Inc. doing pretty much everything that needs to be done as far as paperwork is concerned. If there is any time left after all my work is done, I try to fill my time with craft making. I love to scrapbook and this year I finally made curtains for our house! J I have also recently picked up a “thing” for online journaling- blogging. If you are interested you can check it out at http://www.scskousen.blogspot.com/ . Because of our current living situation, I am only a visiting teacher at church. Can you say Hallelujah! It really has been a nice and much needed break, but I’m looking forward with much anticipation to my next calling when we return to Saint Johns.

Conner is six (almost seven if you ask him) and in first grade. He is absolutely doing fabulous. He just recently earned a triple 100% - A perfect score on his Math, Phonogram, and Spelling tests. Conner participated in tee-ball, swimming lessons, and tae-kwon-do this year. Some of his proudest moments include, reciting a poem in front of his class and taking his Knex creations to school for show in tell. Conner is invaluable to his mother, he is such a good help. Conner is a great example to his younger siblings, he is just a great kid!

Tate just turned 5 and thinks he is the biggest boy ever! He is counting the days (literally) until he gets to go to Kindergarten. He has a great desire to learn and has enjoyed the Gilbert Parks & Recreation Preschool program that he has been in for the last several months. His teacher calls him “a math wizard.” (he must get it from his Dad) This year was his first at tee-ball, he did really well. He also took swimming lessons, he likes the water as long as the steps are nearby, very nearby. Tate is a well behaved little boy. (so far) His teachers in primary are always complementing him. If you were to ask Tate what his biggest accomplishment of 2006 was, he’d probably say, “Beating Mom at a thumb war.” (and everyone else he plays, the boy is good!) We love our little, I’m mean big guy. He does wear the same size clothes as Conner you know!

Jacob is our 3 ½ year old live wire. He loves everyone! He is the first to give hugs & loves and the first to offer a “knuckle sandwich.” If you’re lucky you might get by him without having to wrestle. He also enjoyed swimming lessons this year and needs maybe a little more fear of the water. Jacob loves Thomas the Tank Engine and treasure boxes. The kid will turn anything into a treasure if you’re not careful. I think he has a predisposition to be a pack rat. I have to be very cautious about getting rid of his special things. I have almost started World War III before when something has turned up missing. We are grateful for the extra measure of excitement that Jacob brings to our family.

Grace is now 18 months old and is as eager to go to nursery as can be. (Thank Heavens) She is officially Daddy’s little angel, she can do no wrong in his eyes and the boys call her their, “Pretty, Pretty Princess.” Needless to say she does not lack in the love and attention department. Even I find myself enjoying an occasional girls only trip to the store. Gracie is starting to really express herself with words, and says things like peeze (please) and tinch you (thank you) readily. If she finds that she doesn’t know a word she will just babble away until you figure out what she is talking about. There is no lack of Girlyness in this little one. I’m grateful that she loves her “pretties.” (dresses, necklaces, and hair bows) On the other hand though, she can play trucks and get dirty with the best of them. Grace is our little beauty and we’re glad to have her.

Ethan is our newest addition to the family. He made his debut on December 17th at 1:48 p.m., (thus the late Christmas card) weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz., and was 21 ¾ in. long. Like all newborns, he sleeps all day and is up most of the night. A habit I hope that he’ll break soon. Despite the long nights, he is absolutely precious and we are glad he’s here. He gets all the love he needs. In fact he gets more love than he needs and probably wants. His siblings are always waiting for their turn to hold the “baby boy.”

We are thankful for all of the blessings which we enjoy, especially the blessing of family and friends. We are grateful at this time of year to reflect on the birth of our Savior to whom we owe everything. We wish all of you a healthy and happy New Year.

Merry Christmas,

The Skousens

Reassurance

"We must never allow our burdens to obscure our blessings. There will always be more blessings than burdens-even if some days it doesn't seem so." ~Jeffery R. Holland (Ensign, Oct. 2006, 15.)

I just thought that I'd share this quote. It really struck me even though it should be obvious. As Scott & I try to decide what to do with our little family in light of his job change, we have to constantly remind ourselves that some how, some way, everything is going to work out as long as we continue to try to do what the Lord requires of us. I just needed a little reminder today to count my many blessings.

T'is the Season

I can finally sit in this metal chair long enough to blog! (Yea!) So here's a "shortened" (ha, ha) version of the events of the last week. Enjoy! :)

December 27th: It's Eric's Birthday (Happy Birthday, Eric!) and Scott's first day back to work since Ethan's birth. Heaven help me. I'm alone and trapped at home with our five (5) kids! Did I say five kids, I meant FIVE kids! (Okay, I think I've emphasized the FIVE enough now- and as for the trapped at home statement, I'm only trapped because I'm to afraid to go anywhere with my FIVE kids.) Wish me luck! ( I think I really am going to need it.) I could also use prayers in my behalf if you'd rather. Thanks in advance.

December 25th: Merry Christmas!!! This year was our first experience of having a child so excited for Christmas that he literally couldn't sleep. (Even after we kept the kids out until after 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve) Conner woke me up at 4 a.m. and then at 4:30 a.m. I finally convinced him that morning would come a lot faster if he would just GO TO SLEEP!!! We started the present opening fiasco at 7:30. It was quite a hoot watching the kids. I sure miss the "olden" days when a dollar basketball/gumball toy was just the best thing ever. Life was so simple back then. Thanks to "Santa" we had a superb Christmas. Conner got the Heeley's that I refused to buy, Tate got a remote controlled Hummer, Jacob received a Thomas the Tank Engine Train Set, Gracie is loving her Little Mermaid ride on toy, and Ethan will stay super warm in his car seat "bundle me bag." (If we ever get to go home where its actually cold.) Needless to say the kids did really well for Christmas - I have no idea where I'm going to put all of there new stuff. After the present opening festivities concluded, we headed to my parents house for brunch. Dad made fresh squeezed OJ straight from the trees in the yard & Mom made killer waffles with all the toppings. Fresh fruit & whipping cream or syrup or peanut butter or.... basically however you like it. (My kids love it at grandmas, I refuse to be a short order cook.) Believe it or not the day continues.... at least for Scott. (At this point, I was exhausted and had to take a nap) After I rested, we loaded up again and headed to Scott's parents for Christmas dinner. Of course it was absolutely delicious ham dinner with potatoes, green beans, salad, rolls, and green jello salad!!!! My favorite. (Mom Skousen is a phenomenal cook) We then headed next door to Sandi's and played games and visited with some of Scott's cousins. All in all it was a very busy but memorable Christmas Day full of family, friends, and a great time.

December 24th: After enjoying a beautiful musical presentation at church, we came home and made cookies for Santa, opened our Christmas Eve Gifts (PJ's of course), and headed to the Skousen Christmas Party. We really enjoyed being with the family this year. You don't realize how much your family means to you until you aren't around during the holidays and since we didn't come home last year, this year has been even more meaningful. At the party, the kids performed the story of the birth of Christ. It was great! We even had a brand new little guy (Ethan) to play the role of the Christ child. Conner was an Innkeeper, Tate a Wise Man, Jacob a Shepherd, and Grace was an Angel. Watching them act out the nativity scene was just one of those special moments that makes you glad that you're a parent.

December 22th: Happy Birthday Dad Skousen! Scott relieved me of kid duty (except for the baby) to go to a joint birthday celebration with his family for him & his Dad. Unfortunately, I wasn't up for the journey after a long afternoon at the office taking care of the months billing (Thanks for the flowers, Dad!) and being up all night with Ethan who still has his nights & days mixed up :( Scott & the kids had a good time without me though.

December 20th: Happy 34th Birthday, Scott! I'm sorry that I didn't have a huge shindig planned for you this year. I also want you to know that I do love you even though I broke the December birthday rules. (For those of you who are wondering what the rules are: 1. Gifts may NOT come from under the tree. 2. Gifts must be wrapped in Birthday Paper NOT Christmas Paper. - I used all of our Birthday wrapping paper on Tate.) Hey, I did make you your favorite, Jello cake, whipping cream and everything! Yummy, Yummy! Next year will be better, I promise.

December 19th: Happy 48th Anniversary, Mom & Dad Skousen! You guys are great examples. Thanks!

December 18th: Conner performed in the Franklin Arts Academy Holiday Concert. He sang, "Christmas is Here, Sing Noel," "Be a Santa," and "Silent Night." I was sad to have missed the live version because I had just gotten home from the hospital 30 minutes before he had to be there, but the video recorded version was almost as good! Conner did a great job. Mom & Dad are proud of you son! We are grateful you have a love for singing. Keep up the good work. (What a Handsome Guy!)

Special Delivery!

The Announcement: I did it!!!! I went into labor all by myself! (This is a major accomplishment for me. I've been induced 3 out of 4 times) For those of you who have not heard, we welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world on December 17, 2006 at 1:48 p.m. He weighed in at 8 lbs. 11 oz. and was 21 3/4 in. long. My little sister, Haylee, insisted that his initials be L. B. Skousen so that we could call him Line Backer Skousen. She came up with Ludwig Beethoven and Leonardo Beethoven. After much deliberation, Scott and I finally settled on Ethan James Skousen. (Haylee, you'll just have to call him Line Backer Skousen!)

The Details: My labor and delivery went very well. I awoke having contractions at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. By 5:15 a.m., after showering, packing my bag, pacing the floor, trying to sleep some more, working on the baby announcements, doing laundry, & cleaning up the house, I just couldn't take it anymore and was ready to go. Since it was my Mom's birthday, and she had expressed how extremely tired she was at her birthday dinner the night before, I decided to call and wake my brother. He didn't answer his phone! So I waited a little longer, cleaned out the truck, walked some more, and finally broke down and called my Mom at 6:15 a.m. She came over as fast as she could. Scott & I arrived at the hospital at 7:25 a.m. By 8:30 they had done all the paperwork and decided to check me. To my dismay, I was still dilated to a three! (I'd been a three for at least a week) At that point, they told me that my doctor was not on call and that they would probably send me home. I was devastated. The nurse said the doctor on call (Dr. Lori Mc Neal) suggested that I walk the halls for 40 more minutes. She said she would check me at 10:00 a.m. to see if anything changed before sending me home. At that point, I was tired, in pain, and quite frustrated. I kept trying to explain to the nurse that I have a fairly high tolerance to pain and that if these contractions didn't hurt, I WOULD NOT HAVE COME IN! I'm sure that they've heard that before because she just looked at me and smiled. Needless to say, I walked (and prayed) for 40 minutes and when she checked me, I was at a six! Hallelujah! They were going to keep me and I was going to have the baby today! By the time they got everything situated and my epidural in (Yes, this time it worked. Another huge blessing!) I was dilated to an eight. Dr. Mc Neal broke my water and a little while later, our very special delivery arrived.

Jacob's Announcement

I just thought that I'd share a little bit of dialog that took place at our house today. Jacob, who is 3 years and 8 months old, ceases to amaze me. While I was working on the computer this morning he came in and said, "Mom, my stomach hurts." "Well, go and get a snack then," I replied. But that wasn't a good enough response for him so he continued, "Mom, maybe there is a baby in my tummy." Being completely taken off guard, I said, "Oh yeah, you think so, huh?" To which he replied, "Yeah, maybe its a baby boy." "Hum... I said," "When do you think he's going to come out?" Jacob replied immediately, "At two o'clock." "What are you going to name him?" I asked. After a long pause he said, "Hum.............. Fred." At this point I was trying very, very hard not to laugh and called Scott into the room to listen. I then said, "So, Jacob, you have a baby boy in your tummy that's going to come out at two o'clock named Fred huh! Scott chuckles and asks, "Where is he going to sleep?" Very excitedly and without hesitation Jacob responded, "With me, in my bed!" Needless to say, neither he nor I had a baby boy today at two o'clock and if we had, his name certainly would NOT be Fred! We'll have to think about sleeping situation. Gotta love the innocence of a three year old who is ecstatic about being a BIG brother!

Happy, Happy Birthday!

Today is Tate's fifth birthday. Boy, time sure flies. It doesn't seem like we were bringing him home from the hospital all that long ago. As I reflect on all that has happened since then though, it quickly reminds me of how much can change in five years. Since Tate entered our lives, we have bought our first house, Scott graduated from Arizona State University as an Electrical Engineer, has gone through major surgery, started his career with Salt River Project, landscaped a beautiful backyard, has worked exclusively in the Young Men's program at church, we purchased our dogs, Rio & Remington, Scott's made a major career change twice within SRP, we've sold our first home, moved away from home, and then back, and then away again, bought our second home and renovated it, purchased land, owned 6 different vehicles, had two (almost three) additional children, got a year supply of food, I've worked in the Primary & Relief Society Presidencies at church, we bought an RV, designed four different sets of house plans, raised a pig and had it slaughtered, out grew our kitchen table, vacationed in Rocky Point, replaced our couches, had Grandma T move in with us for awhile, and enjoyed the love and hugs along with the bumps & bruises that are part of normal everyday life, just to name a few things. We are sure glad that Tate decided to come to our family. The last five years just would not have been the same with out him. He adds a calmness to our family that is absolutely essential. I hope that as we celebrated his life today, he doesn't just remember the party at Peter Piper Pizza and all the wonderful gifts he received. I hope he remembers that he was surrounded by family and friends that love him more than words can express and that we will always be here for him. Happy Birthday, Tater Bug!

The End is Near!

I had my last doctors appointment (of this pregnancy at least) yesterday. Miserable is an understatement. I have high, very high blood pressure, protein in my urine (whatever that means), am retaining water like a sponge, and am over _ _ _ lbs. (Somethings are better left unsaid) Needless to say there is no more room in the inn for lack of better words. At this point, I'm wishing I had a donkey to ride... Anything to get this baby here! I have never been this pregnant before. My sympathy to all of you who have reached your due date and have gone beyond. Anyway, my doctor will induce me Monday morning if the baby doesn't come over the weekend. Thank Heavens, but for today I have to get through Tate's fifth birthday. (and boy is he excited, Peter Piper here we come!) I'll let you know how that goes later. Yes, those are my very swollen feet!
